Have you ever received an amusing email telling a story about the mayhem that ensued when some engineers tried to blow up a whale in America? Thought it was just another urban legend? Nope, it really happened. And we have it on film.
Like me, you might be pretty skeptical about some of the stories that you receive by email. That's because, quite correctly, you assume most of them have the same relationship with the truth that politicians do. However, in this case our deeply ingrained cynicism lets us down.
My favourite part is when the woman says "Look, here come the bits of whale" without a hint of alarm in her voice. Lady, whales are big. Run!
Here's one I made earlier
Now, it's all very well to be smug about dumb things other people have done, but in this case I think I know a little bit about what i'm talking about. The pic on the right is a blast I once set off using about 250kg of explosives. That's about half what they used on the whale. We were only standing a few hundred metres away, but due to the sandy ground we knew there would be no frag. Now, if somebody had come along and placed a few tonnes of stinking carcass on top, I feel pretty sure that I would have evaluated my safe distance up a bit. Somewhere around Uzbekistan, perhaps.
