I'm standing in the middle of London's Leicester Square early on a Monday morning. My eyes are sunken pits, my leg drags behind me lamely, and I groan restlessly as I shuffle across the pavement. People are staring at me in confusion. I'm not alone however. Next to me a blood-spattered medical student gnaws on a corpse, while over there a camouflage-clad squaddie sports an impresssive gunshot wound to the head. Why are we here? Well, we've only got one thing on our bloodthirsty minds: Brrrrrraaaaaiinnsss!!!!
If you've ever watched 28-days later and lamented that you'd missed the fun of being part of a zombie horde overruning a major city, then i've got some good news for you. The legions of the undead are recruiting actively, and you may well get the chance to unleash your inner ghoul yet.
The flashmob trend has taken an unsavoury trend lately, with armies of zombies attacking Vancouver, London, Melbourne, Sao Paulo and (rather wittily) the Apple store in San Francisco. The plague is likely keep spreading. Residents of London are warned to barricade themselves indoors and aim for the head on Sep 22, when a new outbreak is predicted to occur near St Paul's cathedral.
Participation is easy. Zombies are (perhaps not unsurprisingly) pretty relaxed when it comes to planning these things. Simply make an effort on your zombiefication and turn up on the day. If you really want to be an organised zombie you can get more info (such as this Facebook group for the next London zombie walk) but otherwise it's just a matter of rocking up on the day. My advice: do make an effort on your costume. It's not difficult, just a matter of a bucket of fake blood and a twisted imagination. People will go all out, and if you're not dressed up the other zombies might not let you join in their impromptu game of stomache churning human-body-part football. So coat yourself in gore and come on down.
And remember, resistance is futile anyway. You can either join the zombie army willingly now, or later when we hold you down and devour your brain! It always goes badly for the humans!
