The way some people talk, you'd have to be a hacker to use Linux. In the old days that might have been true, but modern versions like Ubuntu have made it easier than ever for us mere mortals to use it. To prove this point we're going to follow Zem, an ordinary non-techy computer user through the whole process of installing Ubuntu Linux alongside Windows.
Zem is pretty confident with Windows, but has never done anything like installing an operating system before. Using this guide she installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux on her Windows machine, and can now choose which system to use when starting up. This is what the techies call a “dual-boot” set-up, and is the typical way people first get into Linux. She's added her own comments and tips to the guide as she went through the process. So, let's see how she got on!
