So you've got the basic installation done. When you log in for the first time it'll probably pop up with some updates straight away. Ubuntu updates all installed software automatically (Windows can only update it's own system files). Just let it go ahead and download the stuff it wants.
Take a moment to have a little play with it, you'll probably already notice how much faster it boots and runs compared to Windows.
Still, there are some problems. It won't yet play mp3s or a lot of multimedia stuff off the internet. That's because a lot of these things aren't free open-source software, so Ubuntu isn't allowed to distribute them.
But fear not, getting it sorted is dead easy. Try playing an mp3 or a DVD and it'll ask you if you want to download the necessary bits to make it happen.
Also, take a look at System > Administration > Hardware Drivers. Quite often your graphics card (or some other hardware) will be flagged up here as needing to download a new driver. Anything in here is stuff that Ubuntu aren't allowed to distribute on their CDs, but you can download it now that you're up and running.
How about we install some new software?
Zem Sez:
In the driver manager I had to click to enable my video card drivers and restart the computer.
Then when I tried to play an mp3 it asked to download more stuff (Gstreamer extra plugins) I downloaded all three, but it's optional. They each work as plugins for different types of file (mpeg video, aac, xvid, etc)
