Avast ye dogs, and listen up good! It be nearin’ that time of year again. Batten down yer hatches and keep taut the mizzen, for soon we’ll be riding out the storm of piratical misbehaviour that’s known far and wide as: International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Yarrrrr!
Ahem, getting a little ahead of myself there, International Talk Like A Pirate Day isn't until September the 19th. If you haven’t marked it on your calendar, then scribe it in now.
Now I’m sure you’ll all agree that we don’t really need a special day for talking like a pirate. If you’re anything like me, you often regularly lapse into the parlance of a nautical cur (Darrr!) But the harsh truth of it is that we’ll never make any serious inroads on converting the rest of the world to pirate speech, unless we get organised. Thus, great modern pirates Ol Chum Bucket and Cap’n Slappy have designated Sep 19th as the official day for all wannabe buccaneers to show their colours proudly.
Started as a joke between these two salty scoundrels, the celebration of Talk Like A Pirate Day has now spread around the globe. Their website lists the details of special pirate events from Shanghai to Antarctica on the 19th including, appropriately, some being held out to sea.
So how should we celebrate ITLAPD? Well, besides the obvious option of sinking a skinful of rum and singing raucously, your imagination is your only limit. You can even observe it in the workplace, as this fellow demonstrates:
Er, on second thought, you might want to stick to the drinking…
So, now that ye been told, ye ain’t got no excuse! Dust off yer favourite eye patch, buy a new waistcoat fer yer pet monkey and set sail for the 19th of September. Heave ho!!!!
